The hike to Ñaupa Iglesia is a short yet profoundly spiritual experience. This archaeological site, also known as Choquequilla, is an ancient Inca temple dedicated to lunar worship and ancestral deities. It is renowned for its altar carved into living rock and its unusually shaped stone portal, which have made it a sacred destination for rituals and pilgrimages up to the present day.
Located near Ollantaytambo, this hike is perfect for those seeking a deeper connection with the Andean worldview and the energy of nature, all in a serene setting far from conventional tourism.
📅 Itinerary
We will pick you up from your accommodation in Ollantaytambo or Cusco around 7:00 a.m., and travel by tourist transport to the community of Pachar, located in the Sacred Valley. From there, we begin a 40-minute uphill hike of moderate difficulty, along an ancient Inca trail surrounded by native vegetation and views of the Vilcanota River.
Upon arrival at Ñaupa Iglesia, your guide will explain the symbolic meaning of the temple, its connection to the moon, the chacana (Andean cross), and how it was used in spiritual ceremonies to honor the apus (sacred mountains). There will be time for meditation, photographs, and to feel the energy of the site.
After the visit, we descend along the same path back to Pachar, where we can optionally have lunch or continue to Ollantaytambo. Return time will be approximately 12:30 p.m., depending on the group’s pace.
