The hike to Pumamarca is an authentic experience that combines Andean landscapes, Inca history, and connection with local communities. This route takes you along ancient stone paths, living agricultural terraces, and the impressive archaeological complex of Pumamarca, located on a strategic hill with panoramic views of the Patacancha Valley.
Unlike other more crowded tourist destinations, this hike is perfect for those seeking an alternative and less explored route. The archaeological site, whose name means “Town of the Puma,” offers a special energy and architecture that reveals how the Incas controlled access to the Sacred Valley from the heights.
📅 Itinerary
We start the tour with pick-up from your accommodation in Ollantaytambo around 8:00 a.m. Then, a short drive of about 20 minutes will take us to the village of Pallata, the starting point of our hike.
The trail ascends gently through farmland, ancient terraces, and small eucalyptus groves. Along the way, the guide will share insights about Andean agriculture, native flora, and the strategic role of Pumamarca. The hike takes between 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the group’s pace.
Once in Pumamarca, we will explore the stone structures, watchtowers, hydraulic channels, and terraces. After some time to rest, take photos, and enjoy a box lunch, we will begin our descent back to Ollantaytambo either on foot or by vehicle, arriving around 2:30 p.m.
